Common Holiday Insurance Claims

Dec 10, 2015

The holidays are a busy time. Certainly one where your insurance policies are the farthest thing from your mind. However, with all the hustle and bustle it’s important to slow down and be aware of your surroundings. Just as there was an uptick in kitchen fire claims for the Thanksgiving holiday, claims also increase during the Christmas holiday as well.

The holiday season is rife with hazards, fires, burglaries, and car accidents are at the top of the list. If you want to make sure you have a holly, jolly Christmas, free of catastrophes, take these factors into considerations.

Fires – The incidence of house fires increases 15 percent during the Holiday season. Between candles, fire places, new cooking techniques, and the chaos of having a house full of relatives, fires are bound to break out. Dried out Christmas trees that receive a couple volts from an overloaded socket can also contribute to a Christmas catastrophe that can result in a claim that exceeds $100,000 in damage.  To avoid fires this season, slow down and pay attention to your surroundings. Switch out candles for battery operated alternatives, and make sure to not overload your power sources with excessive holiday lights and electronics.

Burglary – There’s a seven percent increase in theft during the holiday season. Expensive gifts in plain view under the tree and in the back seat of your car while your shopping can be an all-too tempting invitation to burglars. In the hustle and bustle of it all, don’t forget about your home security.

Car Accidents – Holidays are the most dangerous time to be on the road. This is in part to the amount of people on the road and an increase in distracted, or drunk driving. Crowded parking lots beget many fender benders this time of year as well so pay attention. Travelling to Grandma’s house from your home in Viera can result in severe and fatal traffic accidents. Remember to be patient on the road during this season. Drive defensively, give your cell phone to your navigator, and always have a designated driver.

Preventing common holiday insurance claims can be easy if you take your time this Christmas and don’t let yourself get too stressed out. Easier said than done, we know. By letting everyone help with dinner, being patient on the road, and taking a few precautions with your decorating, you can ensure a holly, jolly Christmas.

As we approach the mid-year mark (can you believe how quickly time flies?), we at Anthony Insurance Agency want to ensure your coverage is current and aligns with any recent life changes. It's essential to review your coverage periodically, especially after significant life events, as they can impact your coverage and premiums. Here are some common events that may affect your needs: Family Dynamics Changes in family size, marital status, or the unfortunate loss of a family member can significantly impact your insurance needs. For instance, adding a new family member might necessitate more extensive health or life insurance coverage, while a change in marital status might require updating beneficiary designations. Location Changes Relocating to a new address or a student moving away for college can also influence your insurance requirements. Moving to a new home might require adjustments in your homeowners or renters insurance, while a child going to college might need specific coverage for their belongings. Insurance Transitions Turning 26 and transitioning off a parent's insurance plan or experiencing a loss of job-related coverage are critical moments to reassess your insurance policies. These transitions can leave gaps in coverage that need to be addressed promptly to avoid lapses. Miscellaneous Milestones Becoming eligible for Medicare, fluctuations in income, achieving U.S. citizenship status, or transitioning post-incarceration are other significant milestones that can alter your insurance needs. Each of these events can affect the type and amount of coverage that is most appropriate for your situation. If any of these situations resonate with you, please schedule a consultation with us. By updating your coverage, we can ensure you're adequately protected in the most cost-effective manner possible. Let's work together to keep your coverage up-to-date and aligned with your current life stage.
