Although Tampa is far away from our beautiful home of Viera, a recent report about the flood damage from this summer caused us to pause and think about how floods can cause more damage than first assumed.
According to the report Pasco County officials have estimated that $107 million dollars will be needed to repair the hundreds of streets. The Public Works Manager DiAnna Rawleigh says that there are 144 damaged streets that could cost $15 million to repave. Improving, updating, and fixing damaged storm drainage systems is estimated to cost $92.5 million. She added that without additional funding, the repairs could take around 74 years to complete.
This is an astonishing amount of time and money needed to repair infrastructure, and doesn’t even take into account the 300 damaged and 46 destroyed homes that were left in the storm’s wake.
Flooding causes serious damage, and being without flood insurance is a definite risk. It’s unclear how homeowners are fairing in the aftermath of the storm. Or, how much it will cost them to repair or rebuild their homes. Those who were covered have most likely moved on after completing repairs with little to no hassle. Those who did not have the extra coverage are dealing with the repairs completely on their own.
Flood insurance, while not included in homeowners insurance, is extremely important especially in Florida. While our state lawmakers are asking for transparency from the Federal flood insurance program, the best thing you can do is talk with your insurance agent to better understand your current coverage.
